Example of Challenges due to Shrinking K12 School Enrollment.
For full transparency, please see my notes below and see where you agree and disagree.
1. Academic performance is the key focus of a school district.
2. Teachers teach kids; the building does not.
3. Teachers do need a good building to facilitate their instruction.
4. The school and especially the 1914 portion need a few million dollars of modernization over the next years if the school plans to stay relevant.
5. The school board can already spend $5 million without additional authority.
6. If the $6.5M general obligation bond is passed, all budgets for the next 20 years will be maxed out.
7. This leads to limited to no capital expenditures for the next 20 years.
8. Academic budgets will suffer due to project costs potentially hurting future academic quality in an otherwise very nice building.
9. The scope of the bond and resulting project are not in alignment with the core focus of academic performance and therefore should not be approved at this time.
